The tourist island of Bali was struck by a 4.8 magnitude earthquake in the early hours of Saturday morning, killing 3 people, injuring 7 and causing significant damage to homes and places of worship.
The earthquake struck shortly after 3am. It’s epicentre was 62 kilometres off the north eastern port town of Singaraja and struck at a death of 10 kilometres.
It was followed a short time later by a 3.8 magnitude quake at a depth of 282 metres.
The earthquake triggered landslides that killed at least 2 people. A 3 year old girl was also killed by falling debri in the district of Karangasem. Several other people were injured as houses and temples in the area fell.
According to one official, up to 60 percent of houses in the district were damaged and are now said to be unliveable.
The earthquake comes just as the coronavirus epidemic on the island appears to have run its course and the island is beginning to reopen to international tourists.
