Indonesia yesterday posted its highest ever number of confirmed new cases of coronavirus with 56,757 people testing positive to the virus.
This represents a ten-fold increase on numbers being reported in early June with many experts still believing the actual number of people being infected could be much higher.
The surge in case numbers is being attributed to the recent emergence of the highly contagious Delta variant, which began circulating around the same time as large numbers of people moved around the country during the Eid’l Fitri holiday period.
Indonesia’s daily numbers presently exceed India’s daily total of around 30,000 cases per day, prompting some to call Indonesia the new epicentre of coronavirus in South East Asia.
