It’s not set in stone, yet. But plans, said to be “many months in the making”, have been set in place which could see the island of Bali reopening to international tourism as early as next month.
Indonesia’s Minister for Tourism and the Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno, said that the vaccination rollout in Bali was progressing well and that it was very likely the island would be ready to reopen in the very near future.
The government is presently negotiating to establish travel corridors with a number of countries whose vaccination programs are already well advanced.
To begin with, the government plans to to open three Covid-free “Green Zones” where vaccinated tourists will be able to stay and will be free to travel within each zone. The three proposed areas are Ubud, Nusa Dua and Sanur.
In a surprise move, it is believed Lombok’s popular Gili Islands will be included within the Sanur Zone.
The Gili Islands have been one of the areas hardest hit by the effects of the pandemic, despite reporting zero cases of the virus since the outbreak began.
