The second largest State in Australia, Victoria, has reported more covid cases in the past 24 hours than have been recorded across the entire archipelago of Indonesia.
This, as the State’s capital city, Melbourne, endures the highest number of days in lockdown of any city in the world.
Victoria has today reported 1377 new cases of coronavirus and four deaths. Indonesia has recorded 1142 cases in the same period with 58 deaths.
Victoria has recorded 41,000 of Australia’s 111,000 infections since the pandemic began, the second highest number of all State’s, as well as the highest number of deaths, 869 from a total 1334.
Indonesia has reported a total of 4.2 million covid infections since the start of the pandemic and 142,000 deaths.
Melbourne residents have now spent a total of 245 days in lockdown since the pandemic began, beating Buenos Aries which has endured 244 days, with a staggering 234 days in succession.
Melbourne has experienced six periods of lockdown, the third of which, lasted for 111 days.
Australia’s two largest cities, Melbourne and Sydney have been battling to contain the deadly Delta strain since the start of August, with Sydney recording 1599 new case on September 10 this year, the highest number of new infections in Australia in a single day.
This pales in comparison to Indonesia’s record high 56,757 daily cases reported on July 16 this year.
Both Sydney and Melbourne are expected to stay in lockdown until the end of October when both States expect to have vaccinated 70% of their eligible populations.
With case numbers in Indonesia continuing to decline, the government is planning to begin reopening tourist areas, such as the island of Bali, to international tourists later this month.
