July 31 – Child Death Toll Surges in Indonesia Amidst Pandemic
More than 800 children have now died from Covid in Indonesia, including hundreds under the age of five.
The majority of deaths have occurred in the past month as the Delta variant pushes the overall number of new cases and deaths in the country to record highs.
The high death rate amongst Indonesian children is consistent with what is now being observed in many parts of the world. The highly infectious Delta variant appears to be more readily transmissable among children than previous Covid strains.
However the child mortality rate in Indonesia is presently the highest in the world.
